Problem summary
Most buffering comes from the home network — weak Wi-Fi, busy bandwidth or an overloaded streaming device — rather than the stream itself. Work through the checks below in order; most people find the cause within the first three.
Likely causes
- Weak or congested Wi-Fi (distance, walls, 2.4 GHz interference)
- Other heavy activity on your network — downloads, game updates, cloud backups
- Low-power or overheating streaming device, or a full cache
- Player buffer setting too small for your connection
- Internet provider congestion at peak hours, or traffic shaping
- A temporary problem with a specific channel source
Step-by-step diagnosis
- 1Check whether buffering affects every channel or just one. One channel → likely a source issue; all channels → likely network or device.
- 2Run a speed test on the same device or one next to it (many devices have a browser or a speed-test app). For HD, look for a steady 25 Mbps or more; for 4K content, 50 Mbps or more.
- 3Watch for a few minutes with nothing else using the internet. If the problem disappears, it’s bandwidth contention.
- 4Try the same channel in a different player (for example VLC). If it plays smoothly, the issue is with the first app’s settings.
Safe corrective actions
- 1Restart the router and the streaming device — unplug both for 30 seconds.
- 2Use Ethernet where possible. On Wi-Fi, connect to the 5 GHz band and keep the device within clear range of the router.
- 3Clear the player app’s cache, or uninstall and reinstall it.
- 4Increase the player’s buffer size (often under Settings → Player → Buffer) to medium or large.
- 5Switch the player’s video decoder between hardware and software modes.
- 6If your provider slows streaming at peak times, contact them about the issue.
Check that it’s fixed
- Play two or three channels for 10–15 minutes each, including a sports channel (sports streams use more bandwidth).
